CPaaS is being used in all walks of life today, for flight schedule notifications, medical appointment reminders and in ride sharing or food delivery apps (to speak or message with the driver). CPaaS enables digital transformation, helping businesses improve customer engagement and increase efficiencies. Gartner forecasts CPaaS to grow at a CAGR of 30% through 2025.

Customer expectations have grown from one-way communication to omni-channel and conversational messaging. But customers today face “App fatigue”, they are not motivated to download another new app, they prefer to communicate using existing channels, such as mobile messaging and voice.

While Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) and Contact Center as a Service (CCaaS) solutions allow businesses to communicate with other businesses (B2B) or customers (B2C) using specific software clients or devices provided by these services (desk phone, mobile app, desktop app, web app), CPaaS goes one level deeper by offering the individual capabilities—voice, video, messaging, two-factor authentication, number masking, call routing, IVR, etc.—as building blocks that a developer can combine to augment a business process or enrich a business application.

CPaaS Enabler for CSPs

Communications Service Providers (CSPs) can play a bigger role in the CPaaS value chain, which is dominated today by over-the-top API providers, who in turn depend on the CSPs for traffic termination.
