Is Open vRAN Power Efficient?
Recent trials in live networks have demonstrated that a non-RT RIC rApp for switching radios ‘on and off’ can provide as high as 15% to 20% gain even when the interface between radios, RIC, and other parts of the network is not ideal. Additionally, and unique to Open RAN, near-RT RIC algorithms can leverage feedback from the UEs and direct the users affected by shutdown to the appropriate cells with the purpose of maximizing Energy Efficiency KPIs, while maintaining optimal quality of experience for its users.
